Placer County supervisors voted Tuesday to approve draft agreements that would protect a 525-acre property northwest of Auburn from development for good. Known as Harvego Bear River Preserve Phase 2, the blue oak woodland is used for cattle grazing and could hold about 128 homes under current zoning.
If the deal closes, it would help connect more than 7,000 acres of protected land between the Bear River, Raccoon Creek and Hidden Falls Regional Park. The land would also join the county conservation program's reserve, which holds 9,223 acres toward a 47,300-acre goal.
Placer Land Trust would buy the land for $8 million, a bit under its $8.13 million appraisal. The county would put in $1 million from its Tree Preservation Fund and the Placer Conservation Authority $1.8 million. The land trust anticipates a $5.2 million state grant later this month, but it hasn't been awarded yet.
