If you use Haines Road in North Auburn, the one-lane bridge over Wise Canal is on its way out. Placer County's Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved construction plans and specifications and authorized staff to seek construction bids. ABC10 reports construction is expected to begin in 2027.

  • New bridge: 73 feet long, two lanes, 32 feet wide
  • Old bridge: 96 years old, showing structural deterioration
  • Funding: federal Highway Bridge Program, not the General Fund

Supervisors also approved a $1.1 million agreement with Dewberry Engineers Inc. for construction management and materials testing. The firm was chosen after nine proposals and interviews with the six highest-scoring firms.

The environmental review is done: supervisors approved a mitigated negative declaration in December 2016, and Caltrans approved a categorical exclusion in September 2017. The work also improves roadway approaches and visibility near Carriage Oaks Lane.

Skates and holiday lights at Historic Folsom Plaza: the Historic Folsom Ice Rink opens Saturday, Nov. 7, and runs through Jan. 18. Themed days include a Princess and Superhero day and a Thanksgiving PJ party, and you can rent a private fire pit near the ice. Highs this week run 69 to 73, so the ice should be the coolest thing out there.
