Good morning, Roseville. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 8th of May.
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Experts say that if California loses the Phillips 66 refinery in Los Angeles and the Valero facility in Northern California, the state's refining capacity will drop by 21% over the next three years and gas prices could near $8 a gallon, though a UC Davis official says such a rise is very unlikely. State officials and the governor’s office plan to work with refiners to keep prices stable — they are moving quickly to address the challenges. KCRA
- ➤ Tariffs may drive up car insurance premiums by 16% and even 19% if exemptions on cars and parts are removed, adding about $387 to $435 to a typical annual bill. Local drivers in Roseville are advised to compare rates from at least three companies (a change that could save hundreds) and consider raising deductibles (for example, from $500 to $1,000) to lessen the impact. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Wilson C. Riles Middle School warned parents after an incident where a student misused a Chromebook that damaged a desk — officials linked the damage to a TikTok challenge that risks overheating, fires and explosions. Principal Brett Homesley urged parents to discuss these risks with their children and warned that misuse of school property will result in strict disciplinary actions — including suspension and reimbursement. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The KCRA 3 weather team updates its exclusive Fire Threat Index daily by analyzing fuel moisture, humidity and wind strength across four regions (Valley, Foothills, Sierra and Coastal Hills) to signal days when wildfire risks increase, with high-risk days marked on the 7-day forecast. KCRA
- ➤ During a boat inspection at Beals Point on Tuesday, California State Parks found an infestation of invasive golden mussels on a boat that had been in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Folsom Lake has been closed to all arriving motorized and trailer boats for 30 days to protect water and hydroelectric infrastructure — the boat owner is working with agencies to decontaminate and quarantine the vessel.
