A bipartisan measure known as AB 1884 that would require nicotine testing for extracurricular student athletes in grades 7 to 12 cleared its first legislative hurdle yesterday at the state capitol.

The bill, which emphasizes early treatment (not punishment), now moves to the Assembly Committee on Education.
