About this event
NOTE LOCATION AND HIKE CHANGE THIS WEEK!
Wandering Wednesdays is walking to the mouth of the Fish Ladder beyond the Nimbus Fish Hatchery just below the dam.
We will walk along the American River to the Nimbus Fish Hatchery and to the mouth of the ladder. The hatchery is closed but we will see Salmon jumping at or near the mouth even if the ladder is not open. The Ladder is usually Open Nov-Dec for Salmon viewing and Jan-Feb for Steelhead viewing but no guarantees due to operational changes this year. The Ladder starts at the open waters just below the dam. It runs under the Hazel bridge parallel to the bike path, connects to the top of old ladder where it has 9 new large viewing windows for public viewing. The reconfiguration is awesome!!!
We will meet in Fair Oaks Village Park at the corner of California Ave & Temescal St in the newly constructed street parking.
We will walk down Temescal St turn left on Bridge St and cross the river. We will head up river on the walking trail along the river as far as we can then continue on the bike path, loop the fish hatchery, walk under Hazel to the mouth of the ladder and return down river on the bike path. Please stay on the left side of the bike path for the safety of all. It's a Bike Path Rule!
If you don't want to go to the mouth or want to stay longer just walk the bike path back to the Fair Oaks bridge, cross it and head back up Bridge St to Temescal St but please let someone in the group know you are staying or leaving early.
We welcome and encourage beginners but note we usually walk 20-25 minute miles.
This will be about 6.6 miles round trip. Just enough to get a little wiggle on and work off some of that Halloween calorie intake. Minimal elevation gain. Approx. 3+ hours hiking time.
More info below.
PLEASE DO NOT BE A NO SHOW! We will meet at the corner of California Ave & Temescal St at 9:00 am. We will start the hike at 9:05 am.
This is a weather permitting hike. Light rain is a go! Heavy or Constant Rain cancels!
Things to bring; plenty of water, comfortable shoes, appropriate clothes for the weather, a snack and an adventurist attitude. This hike will be about 3 hours, maybe a little longer depending on how fast we all walk and how long you stay at the ladder. A fast walker can do it in 100 to 120 minutes or so.
We follow the "Leave no trace only footprints" policy.
Happy Trails!!!
